Music is an art form created to induce emotion, thought, and inspiration in a variety of social contexts, and genres. Music serves as an aesthetic, but also cultural art, deeply influenced by its historical context, social context, and relation to identity. Learning is a process by which an individual creates knowledge and experiences. In a classroom setting, this is done through students and teachers co-creating and pursuing knowledge together. Students learn music by creating, performing, responding, and connecting music to their world. Teachers facilitate learning and encourage student participation through active dialogue and action. Students demonstrate knowledge through engagement with a variety of different media inside and outside of class — exploring music as an active experience that expresses their multilayered identities and addresses the conditions of our world. This active engagement promotes self-driven exploration to interact with music as a lifelong music-maker.
